West Indies have little chance against the might of Australia but there are still value wagers to be had on the top-bat markets, says Ed Hawkins

Team news
Australia have injury problems ahead of a repeat of the 2007 final against West Indies. There is no Nathan Bracken, who has been sent home because of an ongoing knee injury, while Michael Clarke has been struggling with his back.

Clarke has not trained yet since the team's arrival in South Africa. If he fails to make it, James Hopes, the allrounder, could take his place. Peter Siddle is most likely to join Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson in a fearsome pace attack. His only rival is Ben Hilfenhaus
and the way he struggled with no balls in Australia's last outing at the Riverside suggests he won't be risked.

West Indies' woes have been well documented. The world and his wife knows this is a second string team, particularly after a brave performance against Pakistan in their first match. They were shot out for a paltry score but showed tremendous courage to fight back. Batsman Kieran Powell could strengthen the batting while all eyes will be on Gavin Tonge, who took 4-25 v Pakistan.

Pitch conditions
The Johannesburg pitch has been a delight for bowlers. There has been zip, bounce, seam and swing, most notably when West Indies managed to take five wickets against Pakistan. There was plenty of movement early on in England's match versus Sri Lanka, too when Andrew Strauss employed three slips in a wrecking-ball display by the bowlers. The weather forecast is for bright sunshine.

Match odds
This is a mismatch and West Indies must hope they bowl first and take early Australia wickets. Only then will their price of 17.50 shorten. Indeed, one could gamble on their bowlers doing exactly that but bear in mind timing is everything. A couple of wicketless overs and West Indies will drift quickly and you will find your money being swept away as Australia go about their business even in steady style. Australia are as short as 1.05.

Top batsmen
Conditions at The Wanderers are likely to be similar to the Riverside, Durham where Australia played their last one-day match. The ball moved around in that game and several Australian techniques were exposed.

Shame Watson and Tim Paine, the openers, both went cheaply and although West Indies' bowling attack is considerably weaker, not to mention their batting which could ensure Australia chase a low total, they are both worth swerving.

In that game at Durham Ricky Ponting, Clarke and Mike Hussey looked comfortable. Ponting top-scored with 53 and this column would not put you off backing him at around the 3.50 mark.

West Indies' top-bat market is also relatively easy to decipher. Devon Smith looks to be the pick. He is by far their most experienced batsmen and he has the technique to cope with seam and swing. Smith has been obdurate enough in the past to have scored three Test half-centuries against Australia.

Opener Andre Fletcher also has form against the Aussies. He averages 23 against them in two Twenty20 internationals and four ODIs. In the World Twenty20 earlier this summer, he hit 53 against Ponting's side at The Oval.

Featured market
When there is so much movement in the air and off the pitch, batsmen will edge the ball all day long. In the Sri Lanka v England match, the first two batsmen were caught. But the third, Mahela Jayawardene, was leg before to a ball which seamed back. On the method of first dismissal lbw is as big as 6.00. It is too big and should be closer to the 3.00 mark. Caught is as skinny as 1.50.

India and Pakistan will play in their first game of the year in Saturday’s clash at Centurion in the Champions trophy. Pakistan has already beaten West Indies in their first game, whereas India will be playing their first match.

The bookmakers may have installed the Indians as favourites win the game – 4/5 at Stan James – as compared to 5/4 being offered by Sky Bet for Pakistan to beat the opposition, but that has more to do with India’s record in the last couple of seasons. However, they are missing three of their main players in the tournament, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan, which will have its effect on the team balance.

India will heavily depend on Sachin Tendulkar (10/3 at Bet365 to be India’s best batsman) to deliver the goods. Not only will he be opening the innings, but also has had a good run in the fifty overs version in the last 12 months or so. Gautam Gambhir (4/1 at Bet365 to be India’s best batsman) will look to rotate as much strike as possible at the top, but whether his groin holds up through the entire duration of the innings is a question mark. M.S.Dhoni (5/1 at Sky Bet to top India’s batting) has looked good in the middle order, but in the absence of Yuvraj, he will have to double up as a sheet anchor and a blaster, which will be something of a new role for him.

Despite the offer of 9/2 by 888Sport for Rahul Dravid to top score the innings, one senses that Suresh Raina (6/1 at Sky Bet) will be promoted up the order and could end up being the best Indian batsman. Abhishek Nayar (20/1 at Sky Bet to be India’s best batsman) may get his first chance to play in this game, after his previous attempts had left him without a chance to bat or bowl.

For Pakistan, Younus Khan (4/1 at Ladbrokes to top the Pakistani batting) will make a re-entry into the side, but that will mean that one of the batsmen will have to sit out. With Imran Nazir having not shown any kind of form at the top, he could face the axe, and Shoaib Malik (6/1 at Sky Bet to be their batsman) or Shahid Afridi (12/1 at Stan James to be the best batsman) could be asked to open the innings. One of the two seniors in the side apart from Younus Khan, that is, Misbah-ul-Haq (6/1 at 888Sport to end up being the highest scorer for Pakistan) and Mohammad Yousuf (5/1 at Stan James to be Pakistan’s best) will need to play out the entire set of overs without getting out, and allow youngsters like Umar Akmal (8/1 at Sky Bet to top the batting) to play their natural game. Akmal’s maturity in the previous game was much to write home about and he could be the player to watch out for in the future.

Bayern Munich have the chance to move to the top of the Bundesliga for the first time this season when they go to leaders Hamburg on Saturday in a match which has all the ingredients of a north-south classic.

Hamburg currently have a three-point advantage over their guests, but an embarrassing defeat to third division side Osnabruck in the cup and a 3-0 hammering by Rapid Vienna in the Europa League over the last 10 days have laid bare their weaknesses.

In contrast Bayern have won their last five games and cruised through their two cup games, defeating Maccabi Haifa 3-0 and Rot-Weiss Oberhausen 5-0.

And it is a former Hamburg player who has led their recent revival, albeit not the man one would expect to be firing in the goals.

Striker Ivica Olic traded places with Ze Roberto to join the long list of current players who have represented both clubs along with Piotr Trochowski, Marcell Jansen, Paolo Guerrero and Daniel van Buyten, and it is the latter, a defender by trade, who will be causing the greatest concern to Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia.

He has scored three goals in the last two games and, according to Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, he is in the form of his life.

"Daniel is certainly playing the best season since he arrived here," he told DSF television.

"He has made a massive contribution to us being more stable. He used to always have Lucio or Marting Demichelis ahead of him, but now he has the faith from his coach and he is paying it back."

Bayern will have one eye on Bayer Leverkusen's match in Cologne as they look to move to the top of the table for the first time in over 16 months.

Leverkusen are currently joint top with Hamburg ahead of their local derby at a sold-out Mungersdorfer Stadion.

Hoffenheim have matched Bayern Munich step by step over recent weeks with their impressive form leading them up the table into fourth position.

They are not in action until Sunday, when they host the league's bottom club Hertha Berlin whose coach Lucien Favre desperately needs a win to relieve some of the pressure mounting on his shoulders.

Mainz also have 11 points and will look to keep up their remarkable pace when they travel to Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt defend their unbeaten start to the season at home to a misfiring Stuttgart side who should welcome Jens Lehmann back into their team while Borussia Dortmund and Schalke meet in the first big Ruhr derby of the season.

The weekend kicks off with strugglers Nurnberg and Bochum both looking for their second wins of the season at the Franken Stadion and ends with Freiburg hosting Borussia Monchengladbach.

Elsewhere, defending champions Wolfsburg need to get their home form back on track when they welcome Hannover in a northern Germany derby on Saturday.

Cologne striker Lukas Podolski believes victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Rhine derby on Saturday would be worth far more than the two wins his side have celebrated over the last week.

The Bundesliga strugglers won their first league game of the season at Stuttgart last weekend and followed that up by sending Wolfsburg out of the DFB-Pokal in midweek.

But, as far as Podolski is concerned, Saturday's game is the biggest since he returned to the club from Bayern Munich in the summer.

"Of course it is - it's a derby," he told the club's website. "You want to win this game over anything, and it doesn't matter if we are now bottom or top of the table.

"Derbies always have a great atmosphere, particularly when they are played in Cologne.

"You get extra motivation for a game like this one.

"So much is at stake for the club, the region and for the fans."

However, Cologne's recent record in derby matches does not make pleasant reading with five straight defeats and no win in the last 12 years.

Leverkusen have also yet to lose a game in the Bundesliga all season, although they were beaten in the DFB-Pokal by second-tier side Kaiserslautern in midweek.

Midfielder Simon Rolfes claims that defeat will not unsettle them for Saturday, though.

"Unfortunately, losing is part of football. You cannot win always," he said on the club's website.

"However, we can still go into the derby full of self-confidence.

"We have to deal with this defeat, and we have done that, and now we have to prepare ourselves mentally for the derby."

Cologne's top scorer from last season Milivoje Novakovic has recovered from a groin strain and returns to the squad, although midweek cup hero Manasseh Ishiaku should keep his place alongside Podolski in attack.

Leverkusen will have to do without Lars Bender, who has been included in the Germany squad for the Under-20 World Cup.

On Saturday we shall see the season’s first Derby di Toscana between newly promoted Livorno and Cesare Prandelli’s Fiorentina. The last time these two sides clashed back in September 2007 at the Armando Picchi, la Viola ran out 0-3 winners thanks to Mario Santana and a brace from Pablo Osvaldo. At the end of the 2007/08 season, Livorno were relegated to Serie B but bounced straight back into the top flight to set up this mouth watering game.

Livorno

As a consequence of the defeat to Bologna on Wednesday there is bound to be some changes to the starting line-up. Romano Perticone should replace Dario Knežević in the centre of defence after his injury problems, in an attempt to help tighten up the leaky back-line which has conceded seven goals in five games. Nico Pulzetti will regain his starting place as he comes in for Luigi Vitale in midfield. Mozart, the little Brazilian magician, is unlikely to start the derby given his lack of form of late. Coach Vittorio Russo has been impressed by his young talent, Antonio Candreva, who he believes has great potential. He will retain his position behind the two front men.

1 De Lucia

77 Raimondi - 2 Perticone - 17 Miglionico - 46 Pieri

7 Pulzetti - 21 Moro - 3 Filippini

83 Candreva

10 Tavano - Lucarelli

Fiorentina

After the impressive display against Sampdoria in midweek, Prandelli will look to bolster the energy levels of his starting XI. Adrian Mutu should replace Stevan Jovetic, even though the Serbian fantasista put on a master class of a display on Wednesday night, which included a goal. These two players continue their constant tussle as both fantasisti look to cement their place in the first-team. In the centre of the park, Marco Donadel and Riccardo Montolivo battle it out for a chance to start the derby. Alberto Gilardino is guaranteed his place up front as he looks to keep up his impressive displays with three goals in five games.

1 Frey

25 Comotto - 5 Gamberini - 3 Dainelli - 19 Gobbi

4 Donadel - 15 Zanetti

32 Marchionni - 10 Mutu - 18 Vargas

11 Gilardino

Livorno is suffering from a lack of attacking prowess, with their last goal being scored by Cristiano Lucarelli back in Week 2. Francesco Tavano and Lucarelli pose a lethal combination on paper but the results have not been seen on the pitch. This toothless attack is not down merely to the front men as the creative forces in midfield have not been producing good enough service. The gradual improvements in Candreva’s play could offer the added dimension that is needed to unlock a solid back-line like that of Fiorentina, but the strikers must be clinical. La Viola will look to take the three points from their neighbours with their dynamic wide men, Juan Manuel Vargas and Marco Marchionni, supplying the Romanian fuoriclasse Mutu and Gilardino with good quality balls. ‘Gila’ poses a massive threat to the Livorno defence as he looks to continue his hot vein of form and further impress Marcello Lippi in a World Cup year. The drama of a derby game means anything could happen on Saturday night as the form book can be of little significance in these types of games. Expect a cagey affair to start with, but the superior quality of the team from Florence should come through and see them take the three points in the end.

Sampdoria will be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they host unbeaten Inter Milan at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Wednesday evening’s two-nil defeat to Fiorentina ended Sampdoria’s perfect start to the season, but they have the opportunity to bounce back immediately on Saturday against high flying Inter Milan. Sampdoria are 7/2 (SkyBet) to record their fifth win of the season, although Jose Mourinho’s side represent a much tougher task than the Blucerchiati have faced so far this season.

Last season Sampdoria managed just one victory over the top 4 in Serie A, a poor run of results, which has continued into this season, with the side’s midweek defeat to Fiorentina. Inter are even-money (Bluesq) shots to extend that sequence by recording their fifth straight Serie A vicory on Saturday.

The game has been billed as a match up of two former Real Madrid playmakers, Inter’s Wesley Sneijder, who is 15/2 (Bet365) to open the scoring, and Sampdoria’s Antonio Cassano (9/1, SkyBet) who himself was on the verge of a summer transfer to Inter, before the club had reservations about his temperament. Cassano has arguably been the player of the season so far in Serie A, and the ex-Roma forward looks more mature this term, and seems determined to prove his critics wrong.

The Inter defence hasn’t been completely water-tight this season, conceding in four of their five matches this term. SportingBet offer 8/11 that both teams score, and with Sampdoria scoring in four of their five matches, and Inter getting goals in all five of theirs, that looks like good value.

Inter are the division’s top scorers, and their new strike-force of Diego Milito (4/1, Bet365) and Samuel Eto’o (7/2, Bet365) have an impressive eight between them already. When Inter Milan score, it tends to be one of them who gets the goal, although an anomaly with Eto’o is that he has scored in all three of Inter’s home matches, but has yet to score away from the San Siro. Conversely, Argentine Milito, who has five goals in his last four matches, has scored in both of his club’s away fixtures. Though it is always dangerous to make assumptions based on such a small statistical sample, a possible explanation could be that in away matches, where Inter have less of the ball, Milito’s height is more useful in front of goal than Eto’o’s pace and craft. Regardless of reasons, the 11/10 (Bet365) on Milito finding the net at any time against Sampdoria is a more appealing bet than the 10/11 (SkyBet) that Eto’o scores.

The match, which is a meeting of the third highest, and highest scorers in Serie A, will surely contain goals, and punters who back Over 2.5 at 17/20 (Bet365) should be rewarded. A two-one Inter victory (15/2, Bet365) wouldn’t be a surprising result, although punters should be advised that last year’s fixture between the two sides resulted in a one-one draw (6/1, Coral)

Fernando Gomez, sporting director for Valencia has insisted that he has faith in the ablility of coach Unai Emery despite a recent blip in form for Los Che.

After a bright start to the new season, winning their first two games, Valencia were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw at the Mestalla by Sporting Gijon last weekend before being beaten 3-1 by Getafe in Madrid on Wednesday.

Gomez is unconcerned however and says that people at the club have a "good peace of mind" and will not be overreacting to one bad result which he says was due to a "lack of intensity" on the part of the players.

Valencia now host Atletico Madrid on Saturday with both sides hoping to arrest a slump in form.

"I have no doubts about Emery. Logically we can be doing better in terms of results than we are. I think the loss has exaggerated tension around the team.

"All the efforts will be directed towards securing a victory against Atletico [Madrid] and I am sure the players can achieve this. Let's not go crazy, we are in a good state of mind," Gomez told Super Deporte.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been included in the Barcelona squad to travel to Malaga this weekend after being doubtful with an ankle injury.

The Swedish striker has been given the green light by the Catalan club's medical staff, training without any problems on Friday morning.

Thierry Henry had been tipped to be moved into the central role up front with Pedro and Lionel Messi supporting him, but the Frenchman may not now have that chance.

Instead, 'Ibra' has recovered from the blow to his ankle after two days of rest and will be keen to add to the four goals in his first four games for the Blaugrana.

There are few surprises in Pep Guardiola's squad. Jeffren Suarez is the only youngster to be included now that Pedro is considered a regular in the first team.

Barca, who announced the squad on their official website, take on Malaga in La Rosaleda on Saturday evening, aiming to maintain their 100 per cent start to the new season.

Barcelona squad: Valdes, Pinto, Maxwell, Abidal, Marquez, Puyol, Chygrynskiy, Pique, Alves, Xavi, Busquets, Toure, Keita, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Ibrahimovic, Henry, Jeffren

MADRID, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- There is good news for Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini ahead of his side's Primera Liga clash at home to Tenerife on Saturday night.

Real Madrid has won its opening four matches in the new domestic season and will expect to make it five from five against a Tenerife side that has won its two home games, but lost on its two matches away from home.

Pellegrini will be able to select midfielder Xabi Alonso for the game. Alonso has recovered from a calf problem, while central defender Pepe can play again after serving the last game of a 10-match ban as his side defeated Villarreal on Wednesday night.

With the Champions League returning next week, several other matches in Spain have been brought forward to Saturday night.

League leader FC Barcelona travels to Malaga on Saturday. Malaga has lost gas since winning on the first day of the season and Barcelona will aim to make it five straight wins following the4-1 demolition of Racing Santander on Tuesday night.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola will almost certainly make some changes to his side ahead of a long trip to Kiev. Winger Pedro Rodriguez could start for Thierry Henry, while Toure Yaya and Maxwell may also be in the starting 11.

Meanwhile striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich is doubtful with a twisted ankle.

Sevilla travels to play Athletic Club Bilbao in San Mames. Both sides have won three out of four games this season.

Sevilla beat Mallorca 2-0 on Tuesday, while Athletic suffered its first defeat of the season in Tenerife 24 hours later.

Athletic coach Joaquin Caparros made seven changes to his side as he rested players such as Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente. They will both start in what promises to be an entertaining match between two in form sides.

Finally, Valencia's Mestalla stadium has an attractive match with Atletico Madrid the visitor. Atletico has yet to win a game this season and is second from bottom of the table.

Valencia meanwhile has slipped back after winning its first two matches. A draw at home to Sporting Gijon followed by a 3-1 midweek defeat in Getafe has put the breaks on Unai Emery's side.

Failure to win for either side will put its respective coach under the spotlight. The demanding Valencia supporters will want to see a good performance from strikers David Villa and David Silva after a week in which Emery was given the backing of the Board of Directors.
