Added Incentive For The Champions

When Pep Guardiola looked at fixture list at the start of the season, Atletico Madrid would have been the stand-out game in terms of difficulty, and they coasted through that with ease. As a result, anything short of maximum points going into the international break will be seen as a disappointment for the Catalan giants.

They have the added incentive of knowing that a comprehensive win may put a little extra pressure on rivals Real Madrid, who face a testing trip away to Sevilla on Sunday. Barcelona would love to go into the international break with even the slightest psychological advantage over their great rivals, and winning well against Almeria would be the perfect way to lay down the gauntlet to Madrid. Of course, Madrid could very well win, but first blood is potentially there for the taking.

This fixture last season was one of those games in which Barca started at a lightning quick pace and won the game inside the opening 20 minutes. Four of their five goals came inside 25 minutes, and the fifth came before the break. Such systematic destruction of teams of a lower level was one of the cornerstones of Barca's success last term, and coach Pep Guardiola will be keen to retain that ruthlessness as this campaign wears on.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will want to continue his impressive scoring start, while Lionel Messi is odds on for Ballon d'Or success this year. Andres Iniesta is fully fit, or close to it, while Bojan Krkic is also returning for the Blaugrana. The mood at Camp Nou couldn't be better, and a big win here would be the perfect celebration before the international break.

First Blood Vital For Visitors

Almeria's last four fixtures have been against teams Barcelona have faced already this season. Though the Andalusian side have managed a decent return of five points from those games and a neutral goal difference, Barca secured maximum points with a positive goal difference of 11 against the same four opponents.

Those statistics suggest Barcelona will be challenging for the title next April whereas Almeria will be desperately clinging to their Primera Liga status, and there is a strong chance that is exactly how things will pan out for both sides.

Almeria finished 11th last term and eighth the previous season largely thanks to the goals provided by Alvaro Negredo. Without that supply they will struggle to put three points on the board in games, and scraping draws will not keep them in the top tier of Spanish football.

Hugo Sanchez said this week that his side can surprise Barcelona at Camp Nou, and they can, but they need to do what no side has managed so far this season against the champions, score first. Then the easy part is defending for their lives and hitting Barca on the counterattack.

TEAM NEWS

Barcelona

Dmytro Chygrynskiy is out after straining knee ligaments last week. Bojan Krkic could return to the squad after a month on the sidelines, but Thierry Henry is unlikely to recover from his injury in time. Pep Guardiola will probably name his strongest possible side with the international break coming up.

Probable Starting XI (4-3-3): Valdes – Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal – Keita, Xavi, Busquets – Messi, Ibrahimovic, Iniesta

Almeria

Cameroonian central midfielder Modeste M'Bami could make his debut after signing a season-long deal with the club. Hugo Sanchez has no injury concerns going into the game and should field an unchanged side from that which drew with Racing Santander last week.

Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Diego Alves – Michel, Acasiete, Chico, Guilherme – Bernardello, Soriano – Nieto, Piatti, Crusat – Uche.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Barcelona

All eyes will be on Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to see if he can maintain his impressive start to life in La Liga by scoring for the Blaugrana in a sixth straight league game.

Almeria

Promising young Argentine Pablo Piatti could be the man to upset the odds at Camp Nou on Saturday. He managed a brace at the Vicente Calderon and has been a leading light for Almeria so far this season.

PREDICTION

A repeat of last years scoreline wouldn't be a surprise, especially given that Pep Guardiola doesn't have a fixture to concern him again until October 18. It should be a comprehensive home win.

Barcelona 4-0 Almeria

Home Comforts

The success of Tenerife’s season will largely hinge on their home form. It is over 1,200 kilometres from the Canary Islands just to the south coast of Spain, and los Blanquiazules have already shown the effects of the long journey with some awful results away from home.

Though they were dismantled by Mallorca and failed to get a point against Real Zaragoza, who were also promoted last season, they have also shown that they are formidable opposition at home. Athletic Bilbao arrived in the Canary Islands having had their best league start for 21 years, but still came away empty handed.

The hosts’ winner against Athletic came in the last few minutes, but it has not all been plain sailing in the Canary Islands.

Tenerife have also spent the majority of recent years in the Segunda Division, while Osasuna, who were reduced to nine men by full-time in their recent trip to the Islanders, and Athletic have both flirted with joining them.

Depor will certainly be a much sterner test than the two sides who have already made the trip to the Heliodoro.

Living La Vida Without Lafita

While they may have problems facing Tenerife, Deportivo La Coruna have been having problems actually getting there. The club’s website announced on Wednesday that “Deportivo have serious problems over travelling to Tenerife on Friday”, due to having only eight days notice of the date and time of the match.

The problems have been now been resolved, but the effect on the team of landing in Tenerife less than 24 hours before their game is due to start remains to be seen. Deportivo’s campaign so far has been more notable for off-the-pitch problems than results on it, with the future of Angel Lafita only just settled and Andres Guardado being singled out for abuse by the club’s fans.

However, coach Miguel Angel Lotina will certainly be looking for professionalism from his side as they have still picked up some good results at the start of the new season. The threat of under-achieving Villarreal was not easily overcome, while they have come closer than anyone to taking points off Real Madrid.

The Galicians do not have the best record at the Heliodoro - they have not won there since 1993. However, the Islanders have only beaten Depor twice since then, although the last fixture in Tenerife between the sides came in 2001.

Udinese winger Simone Pepe has warned his team-mates not to underestimate Inter when they travel to the Giuseppe Meazza this Saturday.

The Nerazzurri showed signs of weakness as they drew with Rubin Kazan in the Champions League. However, the Italian international will not be fooled by the Beneamata's false step in Russia.

"I cannot see their team in crisis. They had difficulty against Rubin Kazan who are a good team. Dominguez scored a great goal, and you cannot blame Inter for that," Pepe told Datasport.it.

"I wouldn't blame certain players either. It was just a lack of attention from the defenders. Inter have great experience and they are a strong side.

"They don't have any weaknesses and their players have qualities to change the game in an instant."

Pepe expects a tough battle at San Siro, and he has given his colleagues a salutary lesson in how to approach the daunting task as he evokes perfection.

"We have morale and we are always improving," added the Italian.

"We have to be perfect in Milan. We cannot allow any mistakes. You cannot afford to give anything away to a team like Inter."

Bruce was a popular figure among United fans during his nine-year spell as player and captain at the Theatre of Dreams and the fact that the former defender is yet to beat the Red Devils as a manager in 12 attempts should mean he is given an even warmer welcome than usual.

However Bruce's current Black Cats squad arguably give him the best chance to put one over his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sunderland have started the season well and currently reside in eighth place but Bruce is aware his side will have to drastically improve their defending from their 5-2 win over Wolves last time out if they are to have any hope of upsetting the odds on Saturday.

The Wearsiders looked all at sea against a spirited Wolves side with a number of their backline still adapting to life in England.

But in Darren Bent, Kenwyne Jones and former United youngster Fraizer Campbell, Sunderland possess a strike-force that can unsettle the best defences.

In truth the champions have looked shaky at the back themselves in recent weeks with the form of goalkeeper Ben Foster and Rio Ferdinand called into question, in particular, and Bruce will be hoping Bent can upset the England internationals and continue his hot streak in front of goal.

United have begun to look more like reigning champions with each passing game and last weekend's 2-0 win at Stoke saw them climb to the top of the table for the first time this season.

Despite their unease at the back, United have still managed to carve out wins by outscoring the opposition with Ryan Giggs in particularly sparkling form.

The veteran played alongside Bruce at United for five-and-a-half years and the Welshman continues to belie his age with a string of match-winning displays of late.

The 35-year-old scored his 150th goal for the club in the 2-1 win over Wolfsburg but, if selected, he will have to be at his brilliant best at the weekend if United are to overcome what have, in the past, been somewhat stubborn opposition.

Despite winning two out of their last three home games against Sunderland, and drawing the other, United have needed late goals in both victories to take all three points with Nemanja Vidic on target in stoppage time last term.

Team news

United will be without Michael Owen with a groin injury. The striker was forced off against Wolfsburg in midweek and will be out for up to three weeks.

Edwin van der Sar (hand) is back in training but despite Tomasz Kuzsczak starting in midweek Ben Foster will come back in against the Black Cats.

Park Ji-sung missed the UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday due to a virus and it remains to be seen whether he has recovered sufficiently enough to feature at the weekend.

Defender Rafael is also back in training following shoulder surgery, but he is not likely to be considered.

Owen Hargreaves is expected to be fit by November as he steps up his recovery from surgery on both knees while summer signing Gabriel Obertan is still out with a back injury.

Sunderland have just two injury worries in Lee Cattermole and John Mensah.

The midfielder was withdrawn at half-time against Wolves last week with an ankle injury but is expected to pull through to face United while Mensah is touch and go after going down with a thigh injury this week.

Possible starting XIs:

Man Utd: Foster, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Giggs, Scholes, Fletcher, Nani, Berbatov, Rooney.

Sunderland: Gordon, Da Silva, Turner, Ferdinand, Richardson, Malbranque, Cana, Cattermole, Reid, Bent, Jones.
