In what promises to be a tense and edgy affair, Portugal and Bosnia-Herzegovina meet on Saturday for the first leg of their World-Cup play-off. Portugal have stuttered up until now, finishing behind Denmark in their qualifying group and narrowly pipping group rivals Sweden to a play-off spot. The Portuguese began qualifying as clear favourites to progress from their group but failed to live up to their billing. Their start to the campaign was appalling and they posted some sub-standard displays at home, including a 3-2 defeat to Denmark and an uninspired 0-0 draw with Albania.

Nonetheless, the Portuguese have shown a marked improvement of late, triggered by the arrival of nationalised Brazilian-born striker Liedson, who sparked a revival of the teams fortunes with a late equaliser in Denmark, a goal that kept Portuguese hopes alive. Carlos Queiroz has come in for some criticism from home fans, with many questioning his call-ups and tactical selections but all this will be forgotten if the ex-Real Madrid man takes his national side to South Africa.

Pain From Spain

Bosnia-Herzegovina qualified for the play-offs by finishing second in a group dominated by European Champions Spain and placed themselves above Turkey and Belgium in the pool. The side managed by Miroslav Blazevic played some impressive football in their bid to reach the World Cup, including a 7-0 drubbing of Estonia and back-to-back victories over group rivals Belgium.

However, the group stages ended in a confidence shattering 5-2 defeat at the hands of Spain in Zenica, a defeat they could afford to suffer as they were already qualified, but undoubtedly one that will have left question-marks over whether they can compete with top class sides. This heavy loss is one that Dzeko and co will not want to repeat when facing Spain's Iberian neighbours on Saturday.

History repeating itself or a first?

Portugal reached the semi-finals at the last World Cup in Germany and will have had high hopes of going far in South Africa. However, it has all come down to a play-off encounter that goalkeeper Eduardo has labelled a “cup final”. As Quinas will be hoping that their bid for qualification does not mirror Turkeys effort four years ago when, after reaching the semi-finals of World Cup 2002, they failed to qualify for the following tournament.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, on the other hand will be aiming to reach their first ever World Cup, having failed to qualify on three previous occasions. The former Yugoslavian nation will be hoping that a place in the World Cup will unite the often-divided nation and will be counting upon the whole country’s support. 74-year-old manager Blazevic understands the importance of the tie, telling the press, “Never in my 40-year-long career have I ever had a more important match”, a view his players undoubtedly share.

TEAM NEWS

Portugal

The build up to this match has largely focused on whether or not Cristiano Ronaldo would be fit to play, following an ankle injury that was aggravated in the 3-0 victory versus Hungary last month. The world player of the year's name appeared on the call-up list for this match but fitness tests performed by the Portuguese medical staff confirmed that he is not fit and will not be able to play. It is likely that Manchester United winger Nani will replace the Real Madrid star in the starting line-up, with surprise call-up Fabio Coentrao another option for the wing. Coentrao has been in fine form for Benfica this season, performing well at both left-back and in his natural left wing position for the Lisbon side. He can now providing options for Carlos Queiroz. Another surprise inclusion in the Portuguese squad is Wolfsburg's Ricardo Costa, who is able to play across the back four – another indication that Queiroz is seeking a balanced squad for this tie. Also, the defender is well placed to provide the inside line on club-mates Dzeko and Misimovic.

Notable omissions for this game include Nuno Gomes, Helder Postiga and Ricardo Quaresma, who have all failed to impose themselves at their club sides this season. In addition, Portugal will be without the Chelsea full-back Bosingwa, who is out with a knee injury.

Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Eduardo – Miguel, Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Duda – Pepe, Meireles – Simao, Deco, Nani, – Liedson

Bosnia-Herzegovina

Bosnia-Herzegovina coach Miroslav Blazevic has named a 26-man squad for this tie, an unusually large squad for a two-leg fixture. The 74-year-old coach reasoned, “because of their technical skills and short passes, Portugal force their rivals to accumulate a lot of yellow cards. That is why I have invited 26 players. I don't want to leave anything to chance”.

The nucleus of the Balkan side are all available to play with particular significance given to the attacking trio of Dzeko, Ibisevic and Misimovic, who will be seeking to effectively hit Portugal on the break. Bosnia-Herzegovina look likely to field a defensive side with a cautious 3-5-2 being the most likely set-up.

“Honestly, I think that even a minimal defeat would be a good result for us in Portugal,” said Blazevic.

Probable Starting XI (5-3-2): Supic – Jahic, Nadarevic, Spahic - Salihovic, Pjanic, Rahimic, Muratovic, Misimovic, – Dzeko, Ibisevic

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Portugal – Simao

The Atletico Madrid winger has been in fine form for his national team in recent matches, scoring three goals in the last two matches, including a sublime volley versus Hungary. With captain Cristiano Ronaldo out of this tie, the armband – and responsibility of leading the attack – will be left with Simao, with his country expecting nothing less than victory.

Bosnia-Herzegovina – Edin Dzeko

Edin Dzeko is one of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s most recognisable names, and not without good reason. The Wolfsburg striker has been in fine form over the past couple of seasons, with his international and club form gaining admirers across Europe, including reported interest from clubs such as AC Milan and Arsenal. The powerful striker will be the focal point of the visitors' attack and any chance of grabbing a goal to take back to the Balkan country will most likely come from this man's boot.

PREDICTION

In a two-legged tie of this importance, both teams are usually cagey with the number one priority being a clean sheet. Both sides, however, have looked susceptible to conceding goals and the threat of Simao and Liedson for Portugal and Dzeko and Ibisevic for Bosnia-Herzegovina suggesting that both games could provide goals. In what is likely to be a close encounter, the Portuguese should edge it, but the visitors could well have an away goal to take back to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Ireland have not qualified for a major tournament since the 2002 World Cup finals, when they again came though a play-off as they beat Iran over two legs.

However, the task facing Giovanni Trapattoni's side is somewhat more daunting as they face one of Europe's big guns in France.

France have not failed to qualify for a World Cup since 1994 - but their current side does look vulnerable, which was highlighted in the group stages as they lost out to Serbia.

The two sides are no strangers to each other as they met in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. During that campaign Ireland grabbed a 0-0 draw in Paris, before losing to a Thierry Henry goal in Dublin.

Ireland are full of confidence going into the match, as assistant Liam Brady explains.

"France have some very talented players, but just because they are talented doesn't mean we fear them," he said.

"There is a confidence and spirit in the camp now which says we can qualify. Our team spirit is very strong and that has been demonstrated on the field. The players know their jobs and if we stick to our game plan, we can go to the World Cup."

Selection

Trapattoni has few selection dilemmas ahead of the game.

Shay Given will start in goal, whilst John O'Shea is fit and will start at right-back with Kevin Kilbane on the left.

Sean St Ledger and Richard Dunne will line up in central defence.

Aidan McGeady and Damien Duff will fill the wide berths, and Stoke's Glenn Whelan should start with Keith Andrews in central midfield.

Captain Robbie Keane will lead the line alongside Kevin Doyle.

Under-fire French coach Raymond Domenech earlier stoked up the tensions ahead of the game by describing Ireland as 'England B'.

But he insists he does respect them, saying: "We know their qualities.

"They are, first of all, a team that has some very good individuals playing in great sides. On top of that there is a spirit that makes them even tougher opponents. We remember playing them in previous World Cup qualifiers. In those games, there was as much atmosphere on the pitch as outside."

Domenech is playing his cards close to his chest in regards his team selection.

Reports suggest that Lyon ace Jeremy Toulalan has a thigh problem and he may not be risked in Dublin, and could be saved for the second leg.

If Toulalan does not play then Bordeaux's Alou Diarra wil come in alongside Lassina Diarra to form a two-man anchor in midfield.

Donemech is likely to deploy a two-man holding role with a trio of Thierry Henry, Yoann Gourcuff and Nicolas Anelka supporting lone front-man Andre-Pierre Gignac.

Anelka looks likely to play on the right in an attacking support role, a position which would have been taken by the injured Franck Ribery.

The French defence is a little bit more stable with Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris behind an impressive looking back four of Bacary Sagna, William Gallas, Eric Abidal and Patrice Evra.
