Four defeats in succession and suddenly Liverpool's title challenge looks almost over. Liverpool fans will cling to the knowledge that in 1963-64, Bill Shankly's side picked up the trophy after losing four of their first nine games, but a win for Manchester United on Sunday afternoon would surely put the final nail in their coffin.

One of the most highly anticipated derbies in recent years, Rafael Benitez faces the very real chance of losing his job if Liverpool are humiliated by the Premier League champions, despite a public "vote of confidence" from the club's American owners; while United are keen to avenge their own humiliation from a 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford last season.

Benitez takes charge of his 200th Premier League game, but may have to do without midfield inspiration Steven Gerrard, as the England man's recurring groin problem. United have suffered their own injury problems, with Wayne Rooney struggling with a calf complaint; but look in much better shape as they have lost only one of their last seven Premier League trips to Anfield.

Liverpool player in focus: Javier Mascherano. As a defensive shield for the back four, Mascherano has a vitally important role to play. One of the world's finest midfielders, he has suffered a dip in form of late and has struggled to assert his dominance in the centre of the pitch. Stopping United's attacks will not be easy and Liverpool need the Argentine to be in top condition.

Man Utd player in focus: Antonio Valencia. With comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo always going to follow the Ecuadorian, he is finally beginning to show his potential. Two goals in two games have made the £16 million investment look a good one. His tricks, pace and crossing ability will cause the Liverpool defence problems, and now boasts a goal threat too.

Key battle: Fernando Torres v Nemanja Vidic. Recovering from injury, Torres has the pace and skill to worry any defender in the world. The Spanish striker has eight league goals already this season and, although he won't relish a physical battle, will be up for such a crucial game. Vidic was embarrassed by Torres when Liverpool battered the champions 4-1 at Old Trafford in March, so will be keen to prove himself. The Serbian centre-back was sent off in both home and away fixtures against Liverpool last season, so if he'll have to keep his temperament in check first.

Tactics: Hit by injuries, Liverpool should use Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel on the wings to support Fernando Torres up front on his own. Javier Mascherano will play the holding role with Yossi Benayoun drafted into the centre to try and inspire some creativity in the absence of Steven Gerrard. United should opt for a three-man midfield to try and dominate centrally, with in-form Antonio Valencia and Ryan Giggs pushed out wide. Both sides will want to dominate the midfield area and, whoever does, will come out on top.

Quotes: Liverpool co-owner George Gillett on Rafa Benitez: "Our family is extraordinarily pleased with him, we believe he is absolutely as good as there is in the business."

Sir Alex Ferguson on the derby: "I am not interested in their league form, I am more pleased with the kind of form we are in. We are consistent and consistent is important."

In the news: Rafa Benitez's future has been called into question over the past week, but co-owner George Gillett has defended his manager. Liverpool fans have chosen to protest over the American ownership of the club and have planned a march to take place before the game organized by the Spirit of Shankly group. Meanwhile, United fans are buying Liverpool beach balls by the case, as they plan to re-enact the incident at Sunderland that cost Rafa dearly.

Liverpool Team News: Steven Gerrard is a major doubt with a groin injury, but Liverpool do expect to have Fernando Torres and Glen Johnson back. Sotiros Kyrgiakos is out after suffering a knee injury, while Alberto Aquilani is still making his painstaking comeback in the reserves.

Man Utd Team News: Wayne Rooney remains a doubt, but veteran Ryan Giggs is poised to return and Patrice Evra has overcome a heel problem. Darren Fletcher (groin) is another doubt while Park Ji-Sung (knee) is set for a couple of weeks on the sidelines.

Probable Liverpool line-up (4-5-1): Reina, Insua, Carragher, Skrtel, Johnson, Mascherano, Lucas, Benayoun, Babel, Kuyt, Torres.

Probable Man Utd line-up (4-5-1): Van der Sar, Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic, Neville, Carrick, Scholes, O'Shea, Valencia, Giggs, Berbatov.

Soccernet prediction: Liverpool's confidence is shot, so the last game they want is against the Premier League leaders and they may suffer. Likely to be beaten in the midfield battle, a draw would represent a great result for Rafa.

Danny Gabbidon hopes to start after recovering from a calf problem, and Kieron Dyer (hamstring) could be in the squad. Dean Ashton (ankle), Luis Boa Morte (knee) and Calum Davenport( leg) are all long-term absentees.

Gianfranco Zola wants to make the Hammers so attractive that a billionaire will dig deep into his pockets and put the club on a firm financial footing.

He wants to start the process of luring a big-money benefactor by beating Arsenal in the London derby at Upton Park afternoon to spark a climb up the Premier League table.

He said: "I would love to see more tranquility around this club. We dealt very well with the problems last year because we focused on the pitch and made things much easier for everybody.

"If you make things happen on the football pitch then everything becomes easier. If we play like we can maybe a billionaire can come and buy us, anything can happen. It is all about playing football well and getting points.''

Zola makes it sound simple but it has been anything but for his West Ham team, who have not won a league match since beating Wolves on the opening day of the season.

To make matters worse the Hammers are in financial meltdown. Their future remains uncertain as Straumur, the stricken Icelandic bank which owns them, strives desperately to find new investment.

The asking price is £100million. Debts are reported at anywhere between £40-50million. If a new owner is not found soon almost certainly Zola will have to raise cash by selling more top stars to go along with the 10 senior professionals who have been sold since June 2008.

The little Italian, however, is not fazed by his first traumatic time in management.

True, he admits to a few sleepless nights and he insists he will not be changing his philosophy of attacking, fluent football at all cost. But if he is frantically paddling beneath the water line then it does not show as he wears an almost permanent grin.

He says: "There are clubs in the league which have much bigger debts than us. As far as I know the owners of the club believe in what we are doing.

"We want to keep the best players and I know exactly what I have to do and I'm doing my best.''

Arsenal expect to have both Croatia striker Eduardo (groin) and Nicklas Bendtner (groin) available for the trip to West Ham on Sunday.

Winger Tomas Rosicky (knee) will miss out and Theo Walcott is set for around a month on the sidelines following knee medial ligament damage.

Samir Nasri, who broke his leg during pre-season, and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (knee) are both close to a first-team return, but midfielder Denilson (back) and centre-half Johan Djourou (knee) remain out.

Arsene Wenger has plenty of sympathy for Zola, as the West Ham manager continues to battle against problems caused by the credit crunch.

Arsenal are proud of their self-sustaining business model, built around the 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium which, so far, has seen them not need to rely solely on the financial input of one individual.

The Hammers, though, are one of several Premier League clubs whose owners have found themselves troubled by the recent economic downturn, as their Icelandic former chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson was hit hard and forced to sell the club.

Wenger can empathise with the plight of the Italian coach, on whom he will look to increase the pressure by making it five league wins in a row.

"I have a big deal of sympathy for him,'' Wenger told reporters.

"I believe he is doing well, but of course he has lost players, and like a lot of teams they have had to cut their expenses.

"From then on it becomes more difficult.''

Wenger, speaking to Arsenal TV Online, reflected: "When the quality of a football club is linked with the financial situation of any given person, you have a risk involved that the club could suffer because of the personal situation of the owner.''

The Gunners boss, though, believes under the circumstances, Zola is doing an admirable job.

"I believe no matter what kind of players you have, it is always important to play in a positive way as it is the best way to be successful. That is what he tries to do,'' Wenger said.

"Zola has had good results at the end of last season. This season he has had less good results, but there is still a long way to go.'

Everyone at Camp Nou has played down the significance of their midweek loss to Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Champions League. They claim things didn't go their way; they didn't have luck; they played well; they created chances. All familiar excuses if you are an Atletico Madrid fan, but the bottom line is that winners make their own luck in football. Barca lost, plain and simple, and have left themselves with some serious work to do to get out of the group now.

Two winter trips to icy Ukraine and Russia are difficult enough to contemplate without the pressure of these being must-win games. Suddenly unbeatable Barca look a little vulnerable.

Although Pep Guardiola was quoted last week as saying that Lionel Messi can play poorly as often as he likes, the absence of Thierry Henry and Bojan Krkic can quickly limit their attacking options if the Argentine wonder isn't on form, and the coach will certainly be keen to see Messi spread those poor performances out a little bit.

With Real Madrid and Sevilla both playing on Saturday, Barca may find themselves under a little more pressure to secure three points in this game. Times like these, after two games without a win, are when real championship credentials come shining through.

No Time Like The Present

Real Zaragoza have picked up just one point on the road so far this season and even managed to lose to Atletico Madrid, making them the only team to fail to pick up at least a point against Atleti this term.

A trip to Camp Nou is probably the last thing the promoted Blanquillos want as they go in search of their first away win of the season, especially considering their last visit here in September 2007 was a 4-1 thumping, but in many ways the timing of their trip to Catalunya may work to their advantage.

The champions suffered their first defeat of the season in midweek in the Champions League and drew the previous week at Valencia. Star Barca forward Lionel Messi has hit something of a blip in form, so now is probably as good a time as any for Marcelino's men to cause an upset. They must approach the game with rigid defensive organisation and concentration, and if they replicate Valencia's defensive display, they may get something here.

On the other hand, they could be the victims of a vicious backlash from the Blaugrana, who will be keen to illustrate that the defeat to Rubin Kazan was more a matter of misfortune than misfiring.

TEAM NEWS

Barcelona

Dmytro Chygrynskiy is available again after a month on the sidelines and should replace Rafael Marquez. Daniel Alves is set to miss three weeks and Thierry Henry is still a week away from full fitness.

Probable Starting XI (4-3-3): Valdes – Puyol, Pique, Chygrynskiy, Abidal – Keita, Xavi, Iniesta – Messi, Ibrahimovic, Pedro

Real Zaragoza

Leonardo Ponzio is suspended while Ikechukwu Uche is a long-term absentee with a cruciate ligament injury. Otherwise Marcelino has a full squad to chose from.

Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Carrizo– Paredes, Pavon, Ayala, Pulido – Gabi, Songo'o, Pennant, Aguilar, Lafita – Arizmendi.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Barcelona

When the pressure is on for Barcelona, one man who always gets his head down and works his way out of the mire is Andres Iniesta. If the Blaugrana misfire in this tie, he will chase everything until he or someone else makes something happen.

Real Zaragoza

Veteran defender Roberto Ayala will need to summon up all his experience and defensive craft to keep Barca at bay. A big performance from the Argentine may give the Blanquillos a surprise result here.

PREDICTION

Barcelona are renowned for winning games early and then controlling the remainder of the fixture at their pace. If Zaragoza can frustrate them in the first half hour, the hosts may start to feel the pressure. If they score early, however, it could be a familiar rout.

Valencia coach Unai Emery makes an early return to former club Almeria this weekend, but it is unlikely he will be able to pass on any inside tips about the Estadio del Mediterraneos pitch to his new charges.

Emery spent the last two seasons at Almeria before moving to Valencia this summer but he will probably not recognise the playing surface at his old stomping ground after it was flooded due to heavy recent rain in the region.

That flooding had led to some doubts as to whether Sunday's match would actually go ahead and while though those fears have now subsided, neither Emery or hosts Almeria will be confident of knowing how the pitch will play.

Almeria coach Gonzalo Arconada, the man who replaced Emery, admitted: "It's not in the best of condition, and it's something which is not good for us as the local team as we have not trained on it for two weeks and are not that familiar with it...

"But this is how it is and I'm conscious that the club are doing all they can to solve this matter as soon as possible.''

Emery still believes Almeria will be tough opponents though, saying: "It seems the playing surface is not good. But taking other things into account, Almeria are a very dangerous opponent, will be motivated at their ground, could become league leaders and as such we must be just as motivated as them, or even more so.''

The good news for third-placed Almeria, who beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at San Mames in their opening match of the season, is that second-placed Valencia will be without influential midfielder David Silva.

It has been decided that the Spanish Euro 2008 winner will need to undergo surgery on his problematic ankle which will keep the 22-year-old sidelined for the next three months.

Despite that though Valencia still have a host of internationals at their service and will also be in confident mood following their 3-0 defeat of Malaga last time out.

A wary Arconada admitted: "Ninety-nine per cent of the players that they have in their squad, be it starters, replacements or those were not even called up, are great players capable of deciding any game.''

Arconada has named the same squad as for the trip to Athletic and as such is also likely to line up with the same starting XI this weekend.

Emery has named an 18-man squad for the match, with Nikola Zigic and Hedwiges Maduro returning to the fold and former Spain internationals Asier del Horno, Ruben Baraja and Vicente Rodriguez dropping out along with Silva.

Emery said of Silva: "The player needs to recover his fitness and that is the most important thing.

"He has made a great effort to play whilst not fully fit and we are all grateful to him for that. Now the important things is that he gets well and recovers so he can play for the national team and Valencia.

"In the squad we've got players who can cover for him.''

Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia is refusing to get carried away by his side's superb start to the season.

Depor make the trip to struggling Real Valladolid having won five of their opening seven games, including each of their last four fixtures.

That has left Miguel Angel Lotina's side in fourth spot, level on 15 points with third-placed Sevilla and only three behind big-spending Madrid in second.

It is not as if Depor have had an easy run of fixtures either, as they have already played La Liga powerhouses Madrid, Villarreal and Sevilla, taking six points from those matches, and that has helped fuel the feeling of euphoria currently surrounding the Galician club.

However, Aranzubia has sought to temper that, pointing out that four of their five victories have only been by 1-0 and were far from straightforward.

He said: "We've won four successive games, we are right up there, but it's been hard work winning those matches and we have to work to continue doing the same.

"The team are doing well, we are all happy, but we are conscious that we aren't winning comfortably or by being a lot better than our opponents, but because we've worked very hard."

Depor were one of the top teams in Spain at the turn of the millennium, winning the league in 2000, then finishing as runners-up the next two seasons and third the following two years after that.

It has not been such a successful time for the La Coruna-based club since then, but a seventh-placed finish last year and the positive start to this season suggests the good times could be on their way back.

Aranzubia is cautious about looking too far ahead though, adding: "We will try to follow this line we're on and, like last year, if in the final weeks we are high in the table we cannot rule out anything, but right now it is too soon to look too high."

In stark contrast to Depor, Valladolid suffered a dismal end to last season and only just avoided the drop, and they have not had the best of starts this term either.

Jose Luis Mendilibar's men currently lie in 17th spot after picking up just one win and five points from seven matches.

However, Valladolid put on a decent show at the Bernabeu last weekend before losing 4-2 to Madrid and Mendilibar has taken confidence from that.

"It's true that we didn't bring back any points from the Bernabeu, but you can see we improved and this will help mentally," said Mendilibar, whose side beat Depor 3-0 in last season's corresponding fixture against the Galicians.

"It's not the same to lose playing horribly like in Mallorca (3-0 defeat) as to losing the way we did against Madrid.

"We are moving in the right direction, although we need to be consistent and continue this improvement against Deportivo."

Mendilibar is without Fabricio, Sisi, Jonathan Sesma, Cesar Arzo, Antonio Barragan and Asier Martin for various reasons but has Fabian Canobbio available again.

For Depor, midfielder Juca could be out of action for a month.
