AC Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini wants his team-mates to stand up and be counted as they look to kickstart their faltering season.

Milan have endured a dispiriting start to the season, collecting just nine points from their first seven Serie A outings - a return that left them seven points off the pace heading into this weekend's domestic programme.

Leonardo's start to life as coach has also included a shock 1-0 reverse against FC Zurich in the Champions League and there has already been plenty of speculation over the his future at the San Siro.

But with vice-president Adriano Galliani giving the Brazilian his public backing once again this week, Ambrosini has tried to refocus attention back to the on-field action.

Roma have not had a flawless start to the campaign either, but go into the match two points better off than their hosts and Ambrosini is desperate for a win.

"We are going through a difficult time but we must react," said 32-year-old Ambrosini.

"Sunday's game against Roma is an important game for us, as we are playing against a team that is above us in the standings and we are playing in front of our home fans."

Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu is out of the match after he injured his left knee playing for the United States in their midweek qualifier against Costa Rica.

Onyewu suffered a suspected tendon rupture and could have an operation as soon as that diagnosis is confirmed, with a three-month lay-off likely after that.

Onyewu's injury prompted Galliani to return to the question of player release when questioned at a commercial event this week.

"In football there are many divergent interests and they must be allowed to co-exist," he said. "The anomaly of football is that the regulating entities are also organising entities. We have to make sure that big competitions like the World Cup and the Champions League can co-exist with the domestic leagues.

"Then we have to resolve the problem of the injured players, especially for the poorer national teams, who have players who play for rich clubs where they earn a lot of money. They are delicate problems. We're working on them, but it's all very complex and difficult."

Roma are waiting eagerly for the return of key attacking duo Francesco Totti and Mirko Vucinic, but it looks unlikely both men will be fit for action at the San Siro.

Totti, who scored twice against Napoli last time out, is struggling to see off a knee injury and may get a spot on the bench at best but Vucinic has a better chance of winning his battle with a muscular problem.

The Montenegro forward looks to have had enough time to recover match fitness thanks to the international break.

He said: "I am optimistic. I will do everything possible to recover and play on Sunday.

"We are playing against a top team, in a wonderful stadium and I hope that I can score my first league goal of the season in Milan."
