The Blues have made a steady start to life back in the top-flight and overcame Hull City on their travels last time out.

They did suffer defeat at the hands of local rivals Aston Villa in their last fixture on home soil, but that was their first setback at St Andrews in 10 Premier League outings.

Alex McLeish's side will also be buoyed by their impressive track record against the Trotters in front of their own supporters, winning four of their five top flight meetings in the Midlands.

Of more concern to the Blues will be the fact that they took seven points from their opening six fixtures during their last foray into the Premier League back in 2007/08, and ended the season being relegated.

Bolton have shown signs of recovery of late, going unbeaten through their last two fixtures following three straight defeats.

Their tally of four points from five games is the same as they accrued at the same point last term, and they were able to beat the drop comfortably on that occasion.

The Trotters can also take confidence from a hard-fought victory at Portsmouth the last time they headed out on the road, their first success away from the Reebok Stadium in 12 attempts.

While both sides have reason to be optimistic heading into the game recent form suggests it will be a tight encounter, with only seven goals scored in Birmingham's six matches so far
