Some of the world’s finest showmen will be strutting their stuff on Saturday in the Spanish capital as Spain celebrate their football federation’s (RFEF) 100th year anniversary with a mouth-watering friendly showdown against Argentina.

Although it is just a commemorative friendly and unlikely to be an exceedingly physical contest, considering the two teams’ penchant to preach the ‘beautiful game’, it will be a match where the superstars will look to outdo each other with skill, agility and panache. For 90 minutes during the clash at the Vicente Calderon, team-mates will put their friendships aside and traditional club rivals will take their confrontations to the international front.

Lionel Messi will look to outshine Xavi, Gonzalo Higuain will try to get the better of Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos will take another crack at putting the stops on Diego Perotti, while Cesc Fabregas and Javier Mascherano will bring their Premier League rivalry to a new live audience.

Here’s a look at some of the other potential key battles that could unfold between Spain and Argentina.

Lionel Messi vs Iker Casillas/Carles Puyol

Two giants of the game in their respective positions, Messi and Casillas have slowly forged an intriguing rivalry in La Liga over the past few seasons.

‘San Iker’ have on a few occasions frustrated ‘El Mesias’, who himself has given the Madrid shot-stopper nightmares during their El Clasico encounters. And Messi will be looking to give his adversary the same kind of misery at international level, except this time, Casillas will have the aid of a more formidable backline, one marshalled by Little Lionel’s own Barcelona team-mate, Carles Puyol. Along with Gerard Pique, ‘Puyi’ has been one of the most fortunate defenders in the world not to have to face the menacing Argentine, other than perhaps during the odd training match or in their own backyards in a quick game of one-on-one while waiting for the barbeque to fire up.

But on Saturday, Puyol will finally know what it’s like to have to shadow Messi. Let’s see if he has to resort to kicking, prodding and tugging. Casillas, meanwhile, will attempt to draw first blood ahead of ‘El Clasico’.

Xavi vs Javier Mascherano

These two could so easily have been team-mates at Barcelona this season, and they may well still be in the near future. Neither are the fastest nor the most flamboyant of players, but what they do best is go about their jobs quietly without fuss.

Xavi’s art and craft needs little introduction and any of his team’s rivals will know that he is the heart and the brains of any side that he plays for. The only way to stop Spain from controlling the game or running away with the match is to stop Xavi from pulling the strings in midfield. And to stop Xavi means getting the ball off his feet, which at times can be as impossible as catching a ghost with a butterfly net.

But in ‘Masche’, Argentina have one of the most tenacious midfield destroyers in the world. The Albiceleste captain will not pretend to use any guile to rob the ball off the Barca playmaker, but he will instead rely on good, old fashioned running and hustling to make sure that the ball doesn’t get to Xavi’s feet in the first place.

Andres Iniesta vs Christian Ansaldi

Not the most fascinating of personal battles it would seem at first, until it is revealed that Christian Ansaldi plays his football with a certain Rubin Kazan, the only team on planet Earth who dared deprive Barcelona of a victory over 180 minutes of football.

Iniesta, ofcourse, avoided Ansaldi almost completely when their clubs locked horns in the Champions League as the Spaniard wreaked havoc – or tried to at least – on the left wing while Ansaldi was busy keeping a leash on Lionel Messi and Dani Alves at left-back. But given Iniesta’s tendency to roam around and swap flanks when he is in Spanish colours, these two will be certainly be bumping shoulders, kneecaps and shins more frequently in this game.

This might be the last chance for a player representing the Barca pride to put one over Rubin.

Sergio Aguero/Gonzalo Higuain vs Sergio Ramos

Who would Spain’s right-back, Sergio Ramos rather face? His own Real Madrid club-mate, Higuain, or the player who tore his defence apart just as week ago in El Derbi Madrileno, Aguero?

‘El Kun’, like Messi, has struggled to perform at his best with the Argentine national team, but that doesn’t mean Ramos will easily win the duel should the two go head-on on Saturday. Aguero is a forward who loves exploiting open spaces and if he senses a gaping hole in the Spanish Armada, he will pounce in a blink of an eye. He will also be hoping to get some form of support from his own Atletico fans.

A sparring session between Ramos and ‘El Pipita’ will ofcourse be a more captivating showdown as the two know each other inside out having spent days on end together at the Valdebebas training ground and the Santiago Bernabeu dressing room. It will come down to a matter of who has done their homework best.

Jesus Navas vs Diego Perotti

This won’t be a direct face-off, but considering how these two outrageously talented wingers play on opposite sides of the flanks in opposite directions, they are likely to bump into each – should they both be out there at the same time on the pitch – whenever they maraud down the wing.

These two Sevilla speedsters will be celebrating their debuts for their respective countries and they will each be eager to make the best first impression, as well as outshine, outrun, outdribble and outdazzle the other. Needless to say, neither will want to cop an earful of gloating when they return to club duty and resume their acquaintance.

The likes of Xavi, Iniesta, David Silva, Messi, Pablo Aimar and Higuain may be the big superstars out on the pitch, and they may be the ones who are expected to entertain the most, but keep an eye on Navas and Perotti to draw a few gasps from the crowd.
