Home Comforts

The success of Tenerife’s season will largely hinge on their home form. It is over 1,200 kilometres from the Canary Islands just to the south coast of Spain, and los Blanquiazules have already shown the effects of the long journey with some awful results away from home.

Though they were dismantled by Mallorca and failed to get a point against Real Zaragoza, who were also promoted last season, they have also shown that they are formidable opposition at home. Athletic Bilbao arrived in the Canary Islands having had their best league start for 21 years, but still came away empty handed.

The hosts’ winner against Athletic came in the last few minutes, but it has not all been plain sailing in the Canary Islands.

Tenerife have also spent the majority of recent years in the Segunda Division, while Osasuna, who were reduced to nine men by full-time in their recent trip to the Islanders, and Athletic have both flirted with joining them.

Depor will certainly be a much sterner test than the two sides who have already made the trip to the Heliodoro.

Living La Vida Without Lafita

While they may have problems facing Tenerife, Deportivo La Coruna have been having problems actually getting there. The club’s website announced on Wednesday that “Deportivo have serious problems over travelling to Tenerife on Friday”, due to having only eight days notice of the date and time of the match.

The problems have been now been resolved, but the effect on the team of landing in Tenerife less than 24 hours before their game is due to start remains to be seen. Deportivo’s campaign so far has been more notable for off-the-pitch problems than results on it, with the future of Angel Lafita only just settled and Andres Guardado being singled out for abuse by the club’s fans.

However, coach Miguel Angel Lotina will certainly be looking for professionalism from his side as they have still picked up some good results at the start of the new season. The threat of under-achieving Villarreal was not easily overcome, while they have come closer than anyone to taking points off Real Madrid.

The Galicians do not have the best record at the Heliodoro - they have not won there since 1993. However, the Islanders have only beaten Depor twice since then, although the last fixture in Tenerife between the sides came in 2001.
