Xerez host Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday evening as they search for their first victory in the Primera Division, and Miguel Angel Lotina has warned his side that they must do a professional job.

"Xerez won't make things easy for us," Lotina affirmed to AS.

"We must be a competitive side. As soon as we think that they are a promoted side who have no points, we start to lose the game. We must play with maximum intensity.

"We also said that Espanyol were dangerous, and they beat us," he added.

Lotina is currently not worried about positions in the league, as only three games have been played in the Primera Division, but los Blanquiazules must change their mentality if they are to move up from 13th place in the standings.

"Right now, the league table doesn't say anything. Atletico Madrid, for instance, have one point.

"[But] the image that we have is not one that corresponds with a team. The only requirement that the fans make of us is that we play good football with intensity, and the supporters have been thinking that we are spineless.

"We can't allow this to continue - this image must be erased as soon as possible."

Villarreal coach Ernesto Valverde has proclaimed that his side are capable of beating Real Madrid on Wednesday night at El Madrigal.

"We have to win and I believe, sincerely, that we will win against Real Madrid," Valverde told the club's official website, villarrealcf.es.

"We lacked a little intensity against Athletic [Bilbao], which we will certainly have tomorrow.

"Apart from that, we must have all the right answers if we want to win because Real Madrid are very effective in front of goal and could beat us on any move."

Although they were defeated 3-2 defeat against Athletic last weekend, Valverde insists that his side are still in good spirits and are ready to take on los Blancos.

"We are encouraged despite the game the other day, which was very hard. Having little time to rest is almost better in these situations, because you forget about the previous bad game.

"It's necessary for us to win soon, and the best time is tomorrow against Real Madrid."

Carling Cup third round
Venue: City of Manchester Stadium Date: Wednesday, 23 September 2009 Kick-off: 2000 BST
Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC local radio & highlights on The League Cup Show

TEAM NEWS

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has no fresh injury worries, although he may rest Carlos Tevez which means Martin Petrov may start his first game.

Roque Santa Cruz (knee) will not have a place on the bench despite reports that he could be available.

Fulham's Roy Hodgson may play some of the second-string side which drew with CSKA Sofia in the Europa League.

Simon Davies, Jonathan Greening and Diomansky Kamara could start after coming on as subs against Wolves.

MATCH PREVIEW

The fall-out from the dramatic Manchester derby may have barely had time to settle, but Manchester City are straight back into cup action against Premier League opposition.

Mark Hughes knows that time waits for no man, or team in fact, so they will be keen to get back into the winning groove after United brought their five match unbeaten run to a halt. Fulham's season is yet to catch fire, with just two wins from their opening five league games, although their Europa League progress has been solid.

With no replays in this competition, all eyes will be on the clocks at Eastlands, with even more extra-time a possibility. History is no real help in finding a winner either - Fulham claimed victory 42 years ago in their only meeting in this competition, at the fourth round stage.

However, it isn't long since Fulham last reached the fourth round stage - the Cottagers made the quarter-finals in 2004/05. City have progressed to two fourth round appearances in the past six years.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• These clubs have met 52 times in all competitions; Manchester City have won 22, Fulham 17 and 13 have been drawn.

• Fulham have won two and drawn two of their last four Premier League meetings with City, who last beat the Londoners in April 2007. That season, City did the double over the Cottagers with two 3-1 wins.

• The sides have met just once in the League Cup in 1967 when Fulham won 3-2 in the fourth round.

Manchester City

• City lifted the trophy in 1970 and 1976 and are hoping to reach the fourth round for only the second time in six years.

• In the 2007/08 season, City beat Bolton in the fourth round - the most recent Premier League club they have beaten in the competition.

Fulham

• Fulham have not reached the fourth round since getting to the quarter-finals in 2004/05. That year they beat Birmingham, the last time they knocked out a fellow Premier League club.

• The Cottagers have never been beyond the last eight.

• The Londoners are looking for their first away win since their first competitive match of the season against Vetra Vilnius in the Europa League.

Manchester United defender Wes Brown refuses to get downhearted at the way his injury curse returned just as he was starting to fulfil his enormous potential.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always viewed Brown as one of the most natural defenders he has worked with at United.

Yet, on too many occasions, the 29-year-old's progress has been halted. Cruciate operations on both knees, a broken ankle and a host of muscular problems have kept Brown on the sidelines for extended periods.

It seemed those problems were at an end though when Brown stepped into Gary Neville's right-back role and became an integral member of the United side that swept to a Premier League and Champions League double in 2008.

At that stage, with a place in Fabio Capello's England team for the first four games of their outstanding World Cup qualifying campaign also secured, the future looked bright for Brown.

Instead, after irritating Ferguson by dragging his heels over contract negotiations and then getting an ear-bashing for an own goal he scored at Liverpool, Brown's career was put on hold again by a ankle injury that ultimately kept him out for all but three games of the remainder of last season.

Brown's hopes of hitting the ground running this term were wrecked by a thigh problem suffered during a pre-season game in Munich, condemning the likeable Mancunian to spend the start of this term warming the bench.

Although the defender has made three appearances, his only starts came against Burnley and Arsenal last month and he did not even make the bench for Sunday's derby clash.

So once more, Brown has a sense of making up for lost time when he features in the Carling Cup tie with Wolves.

"It was frustrating not to be able to build on where I was at the end of 2008," he said. "Getting injured for most of last season was not very pleasant but I am used to it I suppose.

"There is no point thinking 'Why me?' I just get on with it and try to be confident. I am fit at the moment. That is the main thing."

Brown will not be the only United player eager to make an impression against Mick McCarthy's men.

Ben Foster's disappointing performance against City seems to have opened the door to Tomasz Kuszczak while Edwin van der Sar completes the final stages of his recovery from a broken finger.

Kuszczak was always set to feature but the Pole must be aware an impressive display might allow him to keep his place for Saturday's Premier League trip to Stoke.

Darron Gibson gets another chance to build on a blossoming reputation, while Michael Owen is likely to start for only the second time this season after his match-winning exploits at the weekend.

Ferguson does have the option of pairing teenage duo Federico Macheda and Daniel Welbeck - who like Gibson was part of United's starting line-up for the victory over Tottenham at Wembley last March - together in attack.

However, as Welbeck operated in a wider role during the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Everton, there is a chance Ferguson will operate with three strikers, supplemented by Nani and Zoran Tosic, who are also expected to be involved.

Wolves manager McCarthy has vowed to be bold.

McCarthy, who will hand starts to strikers Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Stefan Maierhofer and winger Michael Kightly, believes going to Old Trafford to try and frustrate United would be a mistake.

He is not prepared for his team to sit back and defend for 90 minutes and try to catch United on the break.

McCarthy said: "We will play 4-4-2 against them and have a game with them.

"I don't know what team Sir Alex Ferguson will play but we will play whoever he turns out. But we are not going there to sit back and have them attack us for 90 minutes.

"That would be a recipe for disaster so we will be going up there and trying to make sure that we are on the front foot for the game.

"I have never beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford in anything but we want to try to win the game."

While McCarthy is keen to progress in the Carling Cup, he is also not hiding from the fact he would swap a cup win for three points when the teams meet in the Premier League.

He admitted: "There is the next round at stake but we all know that if you are talking about three points at Old Trafford or getting through to the next round what would we take? We would take three points.

"The Premier League is the holy grail and we all want to make sure that we stay in it."

ASTON VILLA:
Nigel Reo-Coker is about to discover if Martin O'Neill is a man of his word and if bridges have been burned following their well-publicised training ground altercation. If the former England under-21 international plays against Cardiff City that will back up the Villa manager's assertion that the 25-year-old still has a future at the club.

Reo-Coker has trained for the last two days and has apologised for his part in the events that led to him being omitted from the squad for Saturday's game against Portsmouth. O'Neill had an excellent time in this competition with Leicester City, but has struggled to replicate that at Villa and bowed out at this stage last season against Queens Park Rangers. He only made it one round further the previous season, before falling to his old charges from the Walkers Stadium.

He is likely to rotate his squad, but striker Gabriel Agbonlahor believes it is time that Villa started taking the competition more seriously, like Manchester United and Chelsea. "Even though they are in the Champions League, they set out to win it. Maybe we have not taken it as seriously as we might have in the last few years, but we are trying to put that right this time," he said. Winning five games in succession will merely add to Villa's confident air.

Strategy: With Reo-Coker sat at home on Saturday, O'Neill altered his system to play with two central strikers, John Carew and Agbonlahor. To accomodate the repentent former West Ham United midfielder, in what should be a return to O'Neill's favoured 4-5-1 system, Agbonlahor seems the likely candidate to be rested, even if he does want to improve the club's Carling Cup image this season. O'Neill may also use the competition to give Fabian Delph some needed match time. The £6m signing from Leeds United has been noticeable by his absence since his disappointing debut against Wigan Athletic on the opening day of the season. This is an ideal opportunity to restore some lost confidence and Brad Guzan is likely to replace first choice goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

Chelsea's fitness concerns surrounding Didier Drogba have subsided with the news that the striker only suffered cramp during Sunday's game against Tottenham Hotspur.

Didier Drogba lies in pain after sustaining an injury against Spurs.

Drogba was forced off in the second half at Stamford Bridge when he pulled up following a shot and was stretchered off in evident pain.

With a tally of five goals in six Premier League games so far this season, the sight of Drogba being substituted was a worrying one for Chelsea fans despite the 3-0 win extending their 100% record to six games.

But examinations of Drogba's problematic calf have calmed fears regarding a nasty injury for the Ivory Coast international.

"Didier had a scan and there's no problem with his calf,'' said Chelsea's assistant boss Ray Wilkins. "It was just the most horrendous bout of cramp.

"We thought he couldn't release the muscle and it might be something more nasty but he'll be able to take part on Saturday. It is very good news for us.''

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also confirmed that Joe Cole and Yuri Zhirkov will both be handed their first starts of the season in Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie against QPR.

Cole has not played since suffering knee ligament damage in January while summer signing Zhirkov has so far been denied a debut due to a knee complaint.

"We haven't finalised the side yet but Joe Cole and Zhirkov will both start, which is good news,'' Wilkins said. "They'll be very important players for us as the season progresses.

"It's nice to see them come back in. When you can't use someone of Joe's ability, any side would miss him. He has that bit of fantasy that can open up defences, so we have missed him. But we've coped without him and now we'll have something different now he's come back.

"Zhirkov is a very fluid footballer. He's been out for quite a period but, if he demonstrates half of what he's shown in training, then we've got a very pleasant player on our books."
