Portugal were approaching a game that could end their hopes of reaching the finals in South Africa with a fitness worry hanging over their captain and inspiration after he suffered an ankle injury when playing for Real Madrid.

A strong challenge from Marseille defender Souleymane Diawara ensured that Ronaldo missed Saturday's La Liga defeat at the hands of Sevilla but the £80 million world-record signing expects to be in peak shape when kick-off looms in Lisbon.

"I am almost at 100%, and with more treatments today [Friday] and tomorrow I will be in full condition to play," Ronaldo said.

Chelsea defender Jose Boswinga has also been passed fit by Portugal manager Carlos Queiroz after missing his side's 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League last month and may start the crucial encounter.

Portugal - level on points with Saturday's opponents, two behind Sweden and five behind Denmark - must realistically beat Hungary to maintain their challenge for a place in the finals as a draw will eliminate them if Sweden beat Denmark in Copenhagen in Group One.

Even if Portugal do win against Hungary then they may still need Denmark to win as Sweden have a home game against Albania on the final matchday and should win. Meanwhile, Portugal are home to Malta.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi gave few clues about his line-up for the World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.

Lippi is without the suspended Fabio Cannavaro and injured Claudio Marchisio for the Group Eight showdown at Croke Park.

When asked whether he will field a 4-2-3-1 formation on Saturday, Lippi said: "4-2-3-1? Is that the (telephone) code for Dublin?"

The Azzurri need just one point to qualify for the World Cup and Lippi has urged his players to deliver this weekend.

The world champions lead the group four points clear of second-place Ireland with two games remaining.

"There's a big difference between qualifying for the World Cup tomorrow or on Wednesday against Cyprus," Lippi said.

"I want us to qualify tomorrow and not only for superstitious reasons.

"There are two results out of a possible three that will benefit us in Dublin."

Lippi insisted his team, that remain unbeaten in qualifying, will play for the victory.

"We need a point but it will be a mistake to play for the draw," he said. "We have to play our game."

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is well aware his side will be tested by Giovanni Trapattoni's men.

"We will meet a rival that will combat," he said. "They will make life difficult for us at certain stages of the game and we must be ready and show plenty of character.

"To qualify on Saturday would give us a lot of joy."

The world champions end their qualifying campaign against Cyprus in Parma next Wednesday.

Giorgio Chiellini is expected to replace Cannavaro and partner Nicola Legrottaglie in central defence.

Angelo Palombo will take Marchisio's place in midfield and team up with Daniele De Rossi.

Andrea Pirlo, Mauro Camoranesi and Antonio Di Natale are set to play in support of Juventus forward Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Stoke winger Liam Lawrence will start for the Republic in place of the injured Damien Duff.

It will be the 27-year-old's first competitive appearance for his country and just his third cap, but it is the reward for an excellent display and a stunning winner in last month's friendly victory over South Africa.

Trapattoni is making no apologies for desperately wanting Italy to lose tomorrow night.

The Italian will send his Republic side into battle with his native country knowing the outcome of the group could be decided at Croke Park.

Lippi's side need just a point to top the group, but a victory for Ireland - to emulate the one they famously secured over Holland eight years ago to pave the way for their trip to Japan and South Korea - would send them into Wednesday night's clash with Montenegro with their dream very much alive.

For Trapattoni, who has both played for and managed Italy during his distinguished career, the thought of denting the hopes of his countrymen causes no qualms whatsoever.

He said: "Do you have a friend? Do you play cards? Do you want to win or do you want to lose?

"These two games will be for us the passport to South Africa. We know Italy are the world champions and they are still one of the best three or four teams in the world.

"Maybe for Italy there is only prestige in the result; for us, these two games are not only big games, but they are important to our hopes of going to South Africa and the World Cup.

"We always play for three points, in every game we play for three points.

"We can't think about a draw being enough for us, that would be very dangerous."
