Real Madrid will be desperate to secure victory over local rivals Getafe in La Liga on Saturday as coach Manuel Pellegrini looks to end a worrying run of three defeats in the side's last five matches.
|
Madrid were beaten 4-0 on Tuesday by third-tier side Alcorcon in their King's Cup first leg, leading club president Florentino Perez to request that supporters to show patience towards the former Villarreal boss. Doubts had been raised over his future in the Spanish media.
Tiny Alcorcon, who play in the same league as Real's youth team and have a budget more than 400 times smaller than the Spanish giants, managed to humiliate Pellegrini's side despite the presence of Spain defenders Raul Albiol and Alvaro Arbeloa, and several other internationals.
The defeat followed last week's 0-0 La Liga draw at Sporting Gijon, which allowed champions Barcelona to open a three-point lead at the top of the standings, and a 3-2 home loss to AC Milan in the Champions League.
Albiol, who spent a season at Getafe in 2004-05, said he had not slept a wink on Tuesday night after the Alcorcon match.
"We are sad and upset but we know we have another match on Saturday and we have to turn the page," he said on the club's website. "We are with the coach to the death and we have to translate his ideas onto the pitch."
Cristiano Ronaldo, who did feature against Alcorcon, will again be missing on Saturday and will be out of action at least until he has another test on his damaged ankle in a week's time, the club said on Wednesday. They had won every game with their record signing in the side but have slumped to three defeats, a draw and only one victory in all competitions since his injury last month.
Meanwhile, Getafe coach Michel, a former Real player and ex-director of their youth programme, said his players were full of confidence after Wednesday's 2-0 King's Cup win at home to Espanyol.
"We are coming to Madrid in good spirits and in good shape," Michel said after the match. "Sometimes at the Bernabeu that's not enough but the important thing for us is that we play our game and stay solid."
Barcelona also won 2-0 in the cup on Wednesday, with coach Pep Guardiola deploying a second-string side at third-tier Cultural Leonesa, and the European champions play at mid-table Osasuna on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Quique Sanchez Flores makes his league debut as Atletico Madrid coach at Athletic Bilbao as he begins the task of turning around their troubled season, while third-placed Sevilla travel to promoted Xerez.
Undefeated Barca have 22 points from eight matches, Real have 19 and Sevilla 16. Valencia and Deportivo Coruna are both on 15 points in fourth and fifth respectively and surprise package Real Mallorca are sixth on 14.

Sevilla's emergence as a force in Spanish football could well be something that Xerez could look to copy at their own level though as careful buying and crafting a side has been behind their recent success.
The home team in this game may have a much smaller budget, but the principles of nurturing homegrown talent and attracting misfits and cheap imports could see them extend their stay in la Primera beyond on season.

TEAM NEWS
Xerez
David Prieto, Armenteros and Casado are allout as they are on loan from Sevilla and have it written in to their contracts that the may not face their parent club. If the hosts do fancy playing any of the trio it will cost them €200,000 for each player. Xerez have another four former Sevilla stars in their ranks in Antonito, Abel, Michel and Redondo.
Probable Starting XI: (4-4-2) Renan; Francis, Leandro Gioda, Aythami, Mendoza; Keita, Bergantiños, Orellana, Carlos Calvo; Maldonado, Bermejo
Sevilla
Andres Palop and Adriano are both close to making comebacks but the duo will have to wait for the Champions League encounter in midweek against Stuttgart. Frederic Kanoute, Federico Fazio, Tom de Mul and Acosta are all still out meaning that Jimenez will again have to shuffle his pack. The absence of Kanoute guarantees Alvaro Negredo and Luis Fabiano starting places, but Arouna Kone is also in the squad and could be given a chance to show what he can do.
Probable Starting XI: (4-4-2) Varas; Konko, Squillaci, Dragutinovic, Fernando Navarro; Navas, Renato, Zokora, Perotti; Negredo, Fabiano.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Renan Brito (Xerez)
On loan from Valencia, the Brazilian goalkeeper has a point to prove after being ousted from los Che's side last term by veteran Cesar Sanchez. Facing two of the best strikers in the division he will be crucial to Xerez's chances.

This weekend they travel to face Juventus in Turin, and president Aurelio De Laurentiis is hoping for another great match.
"Juventus-Napoli is a very tough match, as it would be against Milan, Inter or Fiorentina," he told journalists near the Lega Calcio offices in Milan. "In a match like this, you are no longer a president, you're a fan."
In recent big matches such as Juventus-Sampdoria and Inter-Palermo, which finished 5-1 and 5-3 respectively, there have been a lot of goals and spectacular football, which De Laurentiis thinks is a good sign for Calcio.
"I'm happy if there are good matches in Italian football," he continued. "I hear Italian football isn't doing well, but when we consider what Milan have won and the Italian national team, I don't think we can complain."
The president then went on to praise new coach Walter Mazzarri, who has obtained two wins and a draw in his first three matches.
"He's fantastic because before the match he becomes a mysterious object, and doesn't even tell me anything," he said. "He doesn't want to lose concentration, he follows his philosophical ideas and I'm fine with that."
Yet, while they have not kept a clean sheet in the league for two months, the swine flu outbreak at the club is perhaps the more serious concern, with Sam Allardyce the latest person at the club to have reported symptoms of illness. The threat of infection will be worrying for Sir Alex Ferguson, too, as he cannot afford to lose first-team players ahead of a week in which they host CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday before heading to Chelsea for a potentially vital Premier League clash the following Sunday.
The 2-0 defeat to Liverpool has increased the importance of Saturday's game for United, and there have been signs of frailty at the back lately that may mean both managers have reason to worry about their defence on Saturday evening.
Manchester United player in focus: Antonio Valencia. Having made a slow start to life at Old Trafford following a relatively quiet few months at the end of his time with Wigan, Valencia is finally starting to recover the form that persuaded United to pay around £16 million for his services. The Ecuador winger struck the bar at Anfield following his first goals for the club against Bolton and CSKA Moscow, and he can exploit any defensive disorganisation with his crossing ability.
Blackburn player in focus: Franco Di Santo. Although perhaps unlikely to start if Blackburn play one man in attack, the on-loan Chelsea forward showed against Burnley why he is touted as a star of the future. Has the spark that could unlock the game if Blackburn are able to frustrate the hosts.
Key battle: Wayne Rooney v Paul Robinson. Any member of the United attack could be up against any member of the Blackburn defence here, but Robinson may have to take responsibility for organising his frequently disorganised back-line, particularly given Rooney's intelligence of movement. If the United man has now fully recovered his fitness, Robinson can expect to face a barrage of shots from his former England team-mate.
Tactics: With Valencia now providing some penetration from out wide, United are able to stretch the play, and the movement of Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen as well as the continued good form of Ryan Giggs should present Blackburn with plenty of problems. The concern will be that, if Fletcher misses out, Rovers are able to dominate the game in the midfield, which may result in a recall for Anderson to help protect the defence.
Antonio Valencia: Finding his feet at United
Damage limitation will no doubt be the aim of the game for Sam Allardyce, and he could rely on Jason Roberts or the improving Nikola Kalinic to hold up the play if he looks to bypass the United midfield.
Quotes: Sam Allardyce on his side's failure to win away in the league this season: "I have to resolve this problem immediately because if I don't it becomes like the yips in putting in golf. You can't put the little two-footer in to win the tournament and if the yips go on and on you get a greater and greater problem, so we have to solve it by the time we turn out at Old Trafford."
Jonny Evans on Michael Owen: "Every time Michael comes on he gets into really good positions. He changed the game a bit for us on Sunday. It was the first time we really looked like getting in behind Liverpool. It was good for him against Barnsley to get another goal."
In the news: Blackburn's swine flu outbreak continues to make headlines. Sam Allardyce stayed away from the team during the Carling Cup win on Tuesday and left his assistant, Neil McDonald, to speak to the press post-match, but the message is that the situation is now under control.
Manchester United team news: Nemanja Vidic returns to the side after serving a suspension for his two yellow cards against Liverpool, but Gary Neville misses out after his straight red against Barnsley in the Carling Cup on Tuesday. Darren Fletcher is hoping to return from a foot problem, but Ji-sung Park is ruled out.
Blackburn team news: Pascal Chimbonda and Vince Grella are both injury doubts, but it is hoped David Dunn and Christopher Samba will have recovered from illness to take part.
Probable United line-up (4-4-2): Van der Sar, O'Shea, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Scholes, Anderson, Giggs, Berbatov, Rooney.
Probable Blackburn line-up (4-5-1): Robinson, Jacobsen, Samba, Nelsen, Olsson, Diouf, Nzonzi, Emerton, Andrews, Pedersen, Roberts.
Soccernet prediction: Blackburn are likely to be focused purely on frustrating United but they have shown a tendency to collapse in recent weeks. It is difficult to see anything other than a United victory, particularly as they look to bounce back from the Liverpool defeat ahead of next week's trip to Chelsea.
The Blues ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at Stamford Bridge in midweek, and manager Carlo Ancelotti will be looking for a repeat performance as they try and keep their place at the top of the Premier League table.
Chelsea had four different players on the scoresheet during the Carling Cup victory, Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda, Deco and Didier Drogba all bagging a goal in the rout, and Bolton boss Gary Megson will hope his defence can do a better job of containing the attacking threat on Saturday.
However, the Trotters should bear in mind that the six times that the Blues have faced back-to-back league and cup games in the last 15 years, the result has been repeated on four occasions.
Both sides are expected to make changes to the teams that were selected in the cup, after a number of players were rested in preparation for the league clash.
Chelsea will welcome back Nicholas Anelka to the starting line-up against his old club as he teams up with strike partner Didier Drogba once again, and in-form midfielder Frank Lampard will also return to the side after being an unused substitute in midweek.
Petr Cech will come in between the sticks as a replacement for Hilario, and Joe Cole could keep his place after impressing on his last two outings as he tries to step up his return to full fitness.
Captain John Terry will also return in the centre of defence, but Ancelotti will have to decide who will partner Terry at the back - with Alex and Ricardo Carvalho vying for a first-team berth.
Salomon Kalou and Branislav Ivanovic are doubts, while Ashley Cole (ankle), Jose Bosingwa (knee), Yury Zhirkov (knee) and John Mikel Obi (knee) are all out.
Gary Megson also tinkered with his starting line-up for the Carling Cup clash, and powerful striker Kevin Davies will come back up front to lead the line.
The big forward has scored five goals against Chelsea during his career, and the Blues will have to be wary of the problems he can cause as the spearhead of Bolton's direct approach.
Davies could be partnered up front by Ivan Klasnic, who played at the Bridge on Wednesday and scored the winner in the Trotters' last league game against Everton last weekend.
Klasnic bagged the decisive goal in the 3-2 win over the Toffees at the Reebok Stadium, and Megson could change the formation to 4-4-2 if he wants to include the Croatian forward.
Possible starting XIs:
Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Samuel, Ricketts, Cahill, Knight, Taylor, Muamba, Cohen, Gardner, Davies, Klasnic
Chelsea: Cech, Belletti, Terry, Carvalho, A Cole, Essien, Ballack, Lampard, J Cole, Anelka, Drogba
